The Difference between Goose Down and Duck Down

Release time:2022-06-22
The year 2001 was the most competitive year in the down industry, and the "Goose and Duck Contest" became a hot spot in corporate publicity and news media reports. To this day, this controversy still continues. Is it necessary to rigidly distinguish who is superior and who is inferior? Next, we will analyze the difference between goose down and duck down from many aspects.

Smell contrast

We know that ducks are omnivores, no matter roughage or green fodder, or insects, earthworms, fish and shrimps, etc. can be used as duck food. Because food contains a lot of fat, duck down has a lot of oil and fat, which generally has a fishy smell, which is called "fatty fishy" or "duck body odor" in the industry.

The goose's feed is mainly plant-based, and general wild grass and aquatic plants can be eaten by the goose. Therefore, goose down has less oil content and almost no peculiar smell.

Odour has always been the focus of goose down versus duck down, but some claims that "duck down smells worse than goose down" are not true. Yao Xiaoman, chairman of the China Down Industry Association, said: "The production and processing processes of goose down and duck down are the same. Goose down and duck down that meet the standards are odorless and harmless, while goose down and duck down with peculiar smell do not meet the standard. "

Filling Power Contrast

In the national supervision and spot check, physical and chemical tests were carried out on goose and duck down with a down content of about 90% in different regions and origins. The results show that goose down is slightly larger, and its bulkiness is slightly higher than that of duck down, but its thermal insulation performance is similar. , while the other indicators were not significantly different.

Whether it is goose down or duck down, there are many factors that affect the bulkiness of down. Under the same down content:

The ratio of tufts and filaments in the down will affect the fluffiness of the down. The higher the proportion of down buds in the down, the better the bulkiness and the better the quality of the down. On the contrary, the higher the proportion of down silk in the down, the worse the bulkiness.

The size of the tufts in the down also affects the fluffiness of the down. The larger the velvet, the higher the bulkiness, and the smaller the velvet, the lower the bulkiness and the poorer the quality of the down.

The moisture content of the down, i.e. the degree of dryness, also affects the bulkiness, with drier down always having better bulkiness than less dry down.

The oxygen consumption index of the down will also affect the bulkiness of the down.

From the analysis of the above four factors, we cannot simply think that goose down is better than duck down. The key depends on the feather quality of the purchased goose down and duck down, and secondly, it depends on the technological process of goose down and duck down in the processing process and the means of quality control.

Goose and Duck Down Products Contrast

Whether it is goose down or duck down, it is habitually referred to as down, and down is used as a filler to make down jackets, duvets, down sleeping bags, etc., which are called down products. Because down products are soft, fluffy and warm, they are deeply loved by consumers. Therefore, goose down and duck down are natural products to keep out the cold.

Duck down can produce up to 3 seasons a year, but goose down only produces 1 season a year, and the production of each goose is small. The high cost of goose breeding determines that the price of goose down is much higher than that of duck down. If buying goose down is about taste, then buying duck down is affordable. In terms of cost performance, duck down is more competitive than goose down. At present, domestic down products mainly use duck down as the filling material, which has been tested by the market for many years and recognized by consumers. Developed countries in foreign countries mainly use goose down as the raw material for down quilts, while the raw materials for down jackets are mainly duck down.

There is a very important reason why the raw materials of down jackets at home and abroad are mainly duck down, because the clothing will be washed frequently, and the duck down contains a lot of oil, which is a protective layer for the down, which can keep the duck down in multiple washings. . However, goose down contains less oil and is not resistant to washing. Too many times of washing can easily lead to the separation of the velvet and the velvet core, the increase of the velvet and the decrease of the bulkiness. A down manufacturer once tested goose down jackets with 90% down content and 90% duck down jackets. After 20 washings, the down jackets found that the down content of goose down jackets was 85% and that of duck down jackets was 89%.

Therefore, goose down and duck down have their own advantages and disadvantages, which cannot be generalized, let alone distinguish who is better and who is worse.
